The MRT Corporation was founded.

Construction begins at Shan Road (between Novena and Toa Payoh).

The first MRT train being delivered to Bishan MRT Depot. Other trains are expected to follow during this times:

Singapore MRT (SMRT) incorporated.
7 November 1987
Official opening of MRT
Stations include Yio Chu Kang, Ang Mo Kio, Bishan, Braddell and Toa Payoh. Officiated by Mr Ong Teng Cheong, Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore.
12 December 1987
Opening of the second section of the MRT
Stations include Novena, Newton, Orchard, Somerset, Dhoby Ghaut, City Hall, Raffles Place, Tanjong Pagar and Outram Park, extended from Toa Payoh. Officiated by Mr Goh Chok Tong, Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore.
1988

Opening of the third section of the MRT
Stations include Tiong Bahru, Redhill, Queenstown, Commonwealth, Buona Vista and Clementi, extended from Outram Park. Officiated by Mr Lee Kuan Yew, Prime Minister of Singapore.
5 November 1988
Opening of the fourth section of the MRT
Stations include Jurong East, Chinese Garden and Lakeside, extended from Clementi.
20 December 1988
Opening of the fifth section of the MRT
Stations include Khatib and Yishun, extended from Yio Chu Kang.
1989
3 November 1989
The City Hall-Raffles Place section was cut off. MRT lines were divided: Lakeside-Raffles Place and City Hall-Yishun.
4 November 1989
Opening of the sixth section of the MRT
Stations include Marina Bay for the North South Line, and extended from Raffles Place. Stations include Bugis, Lavender, Kallang, Aljunied, Paya Lebar, Eunos, Kembangan, Bedok and Tanah Merah, and extended from City Hall. Thus, it starts 2-line system.
16 December 1989
Opening of the seventh section of the MRT
Stations include Simei, Tampines and Pasir Ris, extended from Tanah Merah.
